Shopify metafield guide

Convert Shopify product descriptions to metafields

Product descriptions often contain valuable details—material, dimensions, capacity, care instructions—but a block of text is difficult to reuse. Moving those details into Shopify metafields gives each value a consistent, structured home.

Why product details get trapped in descriptions

Descriptions are flexible, so they are a natural place to put specifications when products are first created or imported. Over time, the same detail may be written in different positions and formats across the catalog. A theme, filter, comparison table, or integration cannot reliably treat that prose as structured data.

A metafield separates the value from the presentation. For example, a product can store its material in a product metafield definition such as custom.material, while the storefront decides where and how to display it. The description can remain useful customer-facing copy.

The manual Shopify approach

For a small number of products, you can structure these details directly in Shopify Admin:

  1. List the attributes you want to standardize, including the expected value and unit for each one.
  2. In Settings > Custom data > Products, create product metafield definitions with clear names and suitable types. Use a measurement type where Shopify provides one rather than storing every value as plain text.
  3. Open each product, find the relevant statement in its description, and enter the value in the matching metafield.
  4. Check the saved values and update your theme or other connected channel only after the data is consistent.

Why manual conversion becomes difficult at scale

Copying a few values is straightforward. Across dozens or hundreds of products, the work becomes repetitive and inconsistencies are easy to introduce: units can be omitted, the wrong value can be copied, or a field can be skipped. Descriptions also vary, so a single spreadsheet formula rarely handles every product safely.

Before any bulk update, decide which metafield definition receives each attribute and review the proposed values. A controlled workflow should preserve the description, avoid overwriting unrelated metafields, and make unclear products easy to leave unchanged.

Where Enzo Field Extractor fits

Enzo Field Extractor scans existing Shopify product descriptions and presents detected details for review. You choose how a detected field maps to a Shopify metafield, preview the proposed updates, and apply the values you approve.

The app is useful when the source information already exists in your descriptions and you want a guided way to structure it. It does not require you to remove or rewrite the original description.

Install from the Shopify App Store

Installation and plan details are handled through Shopify.

Frequently asked questions

Does converting a description to metafields delete the description?

No. Metafields can store structured values alongside the existing product description. Enzo Field Extractor reads the description and applies only merchant-approved metafield updates.

Should every product detail become a metafield?

Usually not. Prioritize details that benefit from consistent display, filtering, comparison, automation, or reuse. General marketing copy can remain in the product description.

Do I need to create metafield definitions first?

Shopify metafield values belong to definitions with a name, namespace and key, and data type. Plan those definitions before a bulk update so each extracted value has the right destination.
